Trousers are the clothing humans, specifically; men wear to cover the lower part of their body. Unlike skirts, they cover both the legs separately. That is, it is not a single flow of cloth. Instead the trousers start at the hips as one piece and separate out to the two legs.  Though this was started as men’s clothing, it has been adopted thoroughly by women too. Trouser can be of many types. In fact anything that starts from the hips separates to cover both the legs and then stops anywhere below knees are known as trousers.

Usually formal trousers are the one which cover the whole length of the leg. These can be of any material also, like cotton, Lycra, etc. Then you can have types which stop just below you calf muscles.

They are known as capris. You also have shorts that stop maximum at the end of the knees. Trousers have different names at different places. 

But what is noticeable is the fact that wearing trousers was banned for women. It was outrageous for any women to wear trousers since the society was very conservative then.

But in around 2oth century, women started to wear trousers for the out door jobs they were doing. And slowly, the trend was picked up first as a necessity then as fashion. Now you have many fashionable trousers both for men and women.

Talking of fashion. You have some trousers that can be simultaneously used as shorts too. This is because they have zippers attached to the legs that can be detached at will.

You also have pockets. They can be anywhere like front pockets or side pockets or back pockets. The trouser has evolved so much that even laws have been formed to curb the menace some kind of trousers are spreading.
